NBS Funding is operated by NBS Finance. Commercial finance broker and introducer, not a lender. No client broker fee.

THE COMMERCIAL STARTING POINT

Asset refinance raises funding against eligible existing commercial assets. Where finance is outstanding, the new advance normally needs to settle it before any remaining capital is released.

Our asset-finance focus is £250k+ transactions and programmes, including high-value assets and substantial portfolios. This is not a guaranteed facility size.

Start with the assets and existing commitments

Two starting positions
PositionCalculation and checks
Owned outrightConfirm legal title and any wider company charges. Value is today’s acceptable lender valuation, not original purchase cost or accounting book value.
Outstanding asset financeObtain a dated settlement figure, confirm title and release conditions, and establish whether the new advance exceeds settlement and transaction charges.
Multi-asset portfolioReconcile serial numbers, registrations, age, condition, usage, location and existing agreements asset by asset. Avoid counting an asset twice.

Working capital, a defined investment or a planned restructure may justify refinancing. Raising cash against essential equipment adds a continuing commitment and can use security capacity needed for later investment. Asset refinance is distinct from financing a new purchase or consolidating unrelated company loans.

A £1.2m fleet is not £1.2m of spendable cash

Hypothetical portfolio — not a valuation or quote

The 70% advance and £15,000 charges are invented assumptions. Actual asset eligibility, valuation basis, VAT treatment, security and provider terms may change the result. If the advance were £600,000 with the same settlement and charges, net release would fall to £75,000.

Request both the net payment and the complete new repayment schedule. Capital released is borrowed money, not profit. A lower instalment achieved by restarting the term may increase the amount paid over the remaining life of the asset.

Keep the equipment useful for the life of the agreement

  1. Value and title

Independent inspection or valuation may be needed. Check ownership, existing security and settlement expiry.

  2. Commercial structure

Confirm whether the proposed refinance or sale-and-finance-back changes ownership, usage rights or end-of-term options.

  3. Repayment stress

Compare instalments, any balloon, maintenance and insurance with the cash the assets help generate.

  4. Exit and replacement

Check early settlement, disposal permissions and whether older assets may need replacement before finance ends.

Provider appetite varies by asset type, resale market, age, condition, hours or mileage. A mixed portfolio may contain excluded items. VAT and accounting treatment depend on the structure; confirm them with the provider and your accountant. The secured assets may be repossessed if repayments are not maintained.

Prepare an asset-level brief

  • Asset register with make/model, serial or registration number, location, age and usage.
  • Evidence of ownership, purchase records and any existing finance agreements.
  • Current settlement letters and proposed valuations or inspection reports.
  • Accounts, management information, cash-flow forecast and use of capital.

Include an asset replacement plan and proposed term. Ask about deposit/equity contribution, interest, fees, total payable, final payments, guarantees, covenants and any cross-security. A valuation alone does not establish affordability or lender acceptance.

Questions before proceeding

Can assets still on finance be refinanced?

Sometimes. The existing funder must be settled and its interest released as required. There must be enough acceptable value and a sustainable repayment case.

Can a whole fleet or mixed equipment portfolio be considered?

A portfolio can be assessed, but each asset needs identification and eligibility checks. An aggregate book value is not enough.

Is equity release the same as selling equipment?

No. Refinance is a funding commitment linked to assets that may remain in use. Some structures transfer legal ownership; check the agreement, end position and tax treatment.
